Diesel in a petrol tank: leave the engine off
A petrol engine is designed to burn petrol, not a petrol-and-diesel mixture. Diesel contamination can cause poor running and affect the spark plugs and other components if the engine is used. Even if the car starts, that does not establish that the fuel is safe. Stop filling, leave the ignition off and phone us.
How the mistake can happen
Misfuelling can involve an unfamiliar car, a portable fuel container or uncertainty about what was already in the tank. The important facts are what the vehicle normally uses, which fuel was added and roughly how much. Check the receipt or pump label if it is available, but do not start the car as a test. Tell us if you cannot be certain what went in.
Misfiring, smoke or a car that will not restart
Diesel in a petrol car may be followed by rough running, smoke, misfiring, stalling or a failure to restart. Those symptoms alone do not prove the diagnosis or tell you whether damage has occurred. If they followed a suspected misfuel, stop safely and switch off. Repeated start attempts can circulate more of the contaminated mixture.
How our mobile service works
We ask about your vehicle and location, then confirm the arrangements for an assessment. The technician explains the fuel removal and flushing work appropriate to the vehicle and confirms a quote after assessment. A suitable forecourt bay, driveway or car park can often accommodate a straightforward job. Tell us about barriers, parking restrictions or limited access when booking.
What if the spark plugs or other parts need attention?
A drain removes incorrect fuel; it cannot by itself establish that every component is undamaged. Where the engine has run, the technician considers the symptoms and assessment findings. If further checks, parts or a garage visit are needed, the options are explained. There is no universal guarantee that all diesel-in-petrol incidents require only a tank drain.
Clear pricing and useful documentation
Fuel drains start from £135, with the actual cost depending on the vehicle and work required. Tell us whether the engine ran and how much diesel was added so the quotation discussion starts with the right information. Keep your job report and receipt, particularly for a hire car or company vehicle. Our team can confirm availability for your Ayrshire location by phone.
FROM THE FIRST CALL
TO THE FINAL CHECK.
We ask the right questions.
Your location, vehicle, what was added and whether the engine ran. We discuss availability and an arrival estimate.
We assess your vehicle.
The technician checks the contamination, explains the proposed work and discusses the quote.
We drain, flush and check.
We remove the contaminated fuel, carry out the appropriate flush and operational checks, and provide a job report.
Can I dilute the diesel with more petrol?
Do not add more fuel as a remedy. Call with the vehicle and approximate amount of diesel added so we can discuss an appropriate assessment.
The engine stopped. Should I keep trying it?
No. Stop trying to restart it and call. Tell us how long it ran, the symptoms and any warning lights.
Can diesel enter a petrol tank from a fuel can?
Yes, contamination can involve a portable container as well as a filling station. Tell us what the container held and whether you know the amount added.
