Wrong fuel in your car: what to do now
Stop filling, put the nozzle back and leave the ignition off. If you are at a filling station, tell a member of staff what has happened. Do not start the car to move it out of the queue or add another fuel to dilute the contents. Phone us with your location before doing anything else.
Not started, ignition on or already driven?
These are different situations, and the distinction matters when we assess the job. Tell us if you only filled the tank, switched on the ignition, started the engine or drove away. If the car has already been driven, stop in a safe place and switch off. Do not restart it to see whether the symptoms have cleared. Explain roughly how far you travelled and whether it lost power, smoked, misfired or stopped.
Choose the right misfuelling service
If petrol went into a diesel vehicle, the concern includes the lubrication needed by the fuel system. Diesel in a petrol vehicle can cause poor combustion and foul the spark plugs. AdBlue in a fuel tank is a different contamination problem and needs a separate assessment. You do not have to diagnose the car yourself: tell us the normal fuel type and what you added, even if you are uncertain.
What a mobile fuel drain involves
The technician checks the vehicle and contamination, explains the proposed work and confirms the price. The job may include removing the tank contents, flushing affected parts of the fuel system, adding suitable clean fuel and carrying out operational checks. The procedure depends on the vehicle and whether contaminated fuel has circulated. A tank drain is not a promise that damaged components will not need further work.

We take enquiries for forecourts, private driveways, workplace parking and other suitable parking areas across North, South and East Ayrshire. Tell us if the car is in a multi-storey, behind a barrier or on restricted premises. Access and permission to work at the site need to be checked before a visit is agreed.
Fuel drain cost and your job record
Fuel drains from £135. The final quote depends on the vehicle, contamination, quantity and whether the engine has run. AdBlue work is quoted separately. The quote is confirmed after the vehicle assessment, and you receive a written job report. Keep the report and your fuel receipt if you need to discuss the incident with a hire company, fleet manager or insurer.

I only added a small amount. Can I drive?
Do not assume a small amount is safe. Leave the ignition off and tell us the vehicle, normal fuel and approximate amount added. We assess the situation rather than relying on a general percentage rule.
Can I tell from symptoms alone?
Symptoms can have several causes. The receipt, pump label and what happened at the filling station are useful clues. Do not start the engine to check whether you chose the wrong fuel.
Can I wait until the tank is nearly empty?
Do not drive the vehicle to use up the mixed fuel. Keep it switched off and call for advice about a drain and assessment.
